SkyPEP is driven by the passion and leadership of our students through the Fort Lewis College Political Engagement Project (PEP)—a nonpartisan, student-led organization empowering Skyhawks to stay informed and take action, from voting and advocacy to community involvement.
This school-wide initiative, a collaboration between PEP, the SkyWords Visiting Writers Series, and Academic Affairs, brings our community together to explore our roles as citizens and shape a brighter future. SkyPEP encourages active participation in democracy, drawing on the rich, diverse experiences of FLC and the Four Corners region. Together, we foster inclusive citizenship and a shared commitment to democratic values.
Encouraging meaningful participation in decision-making on critical issues.
Making political issues accessible and fostering understanding through education and dialogue.
Upholding democratic practices, voting rights, and accurate information.
Welcoming everyone to participate, regardless of background or belief.
Remaining neutral to ensure open, unbiased dialogue.
Find your voice through storytelling, dialogue, and action. Share your experiences, engage in meaningful conversations about civic engagement and social justice, and learn how to make a real impact.
The SkyWords Visiting Writers Series enhances SkyPEP 2024 by fostering civic engagement through storytelling. By bringing writers and speakers to Fort Lewis College, SkyWords encourages critical dialogue on citizenship, democracy, and social justice, promoting an inclusive culture of participation both on campus and in the community. Collaborating with faculty, SkyWords integrates these civic themes into classroom learning, reinforcing the importance of informed and active citizenship.
As part of this effort, the FLC SkyWords–Political Engagement Project (PEP) Common Read and Dialogues invites the community to reflect on the meaning of citizenship ahead of the Fall 2024 election. Through transformative texts, scholars, journalists, and writers offer diverse perspectives rooted in the principles of Responsibility, Relationship, Reciprocity, and Reconciliation.
