A final lecture from an educational legend: Dr. Duane Smith

DURANGO – This year Dr. Duane Smith will officially retire from teaching at Fort Lewis College. Before that, Dr. Smith will give one final lecture that is open to everyone on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Dr. Duane Smith’s Last Lecture will feature stories and insights from nearly 50 years of teaching at Fort Lewis College, as well as experiences in the Durango community. There is perhaps no greater expert on College and Durango history than Dr. Smith. He will share some of that history, along with life lessons, musings and advice, in the entertaining and engaging way for which Dr. Smith has become well known. 

At FLC, Dr. Smith is an educational institution unto himself. He first came to the College in 1964 as an assistant professor in the History Department. Since then, he has become one of FLC’s most beloved and respected professors. Among his many honors is a 1990 Council for Advancement and Support of Education Colorado Professor of the Year Award.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Smith is an avid sports fan. His love for the Skyhawks and the Chicago Cubs is well known. He and his wife, Gay, can often be found in the stands at Skyhawk games. Dr. Smith is also well known for his—to put it delicately—propensity for loudly sharing his views, both positive and negative, during games.
