FLC golfer Jessica Thulson heeding NCAA's call to "Make It Yours"

Earlier this year, the NCAA chose a new Division II tagline: “Make It Yours.” For Fort Lewis College, a Division II school, the new slogan is perfectly timed as FLC added two new sports to its roster this academic year: Women’s Golf and Women’s Track & Field. As the first varsity athletes for FLC in both these sports, the members of the new teams have the chance to take the NCAA's advice and "Make It Yours."

Women’s Golf existed at Fort Lewis College as a club sport for several years before making the jump to varsity. Jessica Thulson, a FLC senior studying history, played on the team when it was a club sport and is now enjoying competing as a varsity athlete.

“As a varsity sport, our scores count to the overall standings and it contributes to our standings in the conference, our place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship, and truly effects the College athletic department,” she says. “When we practice or travel to tournaments, we are playing real competitions now where the scores actually count. It takes the game to a whole new level."

Jessica is a leader of the young Skyhawk team, and is taking playing at the varsity level as a chance to both test her mettle against, and be inspired by, the best that Division II can offer.

“The competition is a lot of fun because we are often competing with girls who have played golf for a long time and have a lot of skills that help them succeed in tournament golf,” she explains. “The girls who are in the top 20 in the tournaments are shooting strong scores, and it shows us that there are a lot of talented female golfers out there.”

Meeting the challenges of playing competitive golf to better herself, both on and off the course, is one way that Jessica is taking this opportunity and making it hers. She’s also taking advantage of the benefits that attending Fort Lewis College offers.

“Fort Lewis College is such a great school,” she says. “I hope that it will attract players from all over the country who want to play competitive golf in such a beautiful place like Durango. The College has so much to offer academically, as well as its wonderful location.”
