FLC students get a nod in making Durango one of the Best River Towns in America

In what will come as no surprise to anyone living in Durango, Outside Magazine named Durango one of the Best River Towns in America. More than 1,700 people cast their vote for Durango, with the multitude of activities on and off the water cited as reasons for the honor.

Fort Lewis College also got a mention in the article Outside did for the Best River Towns list. “The town itself is less pretentious than other Colorado tourist hubs,” the article stated, “mainly because of the balance of working ranchers, young professionals, athletes, artists, retirees, and the 4,000 liberal arts students attending Fort Lewis College.” So good job, FLC students, for helping to give this town character.

Fort Lewis College enjoys a long-standing commitment to utilizing the outdoors, not only as a playground, but also as a classroom. FLC Biology students, for example, take advantage of the many local bodies of water, including the Animas River, to actually get their hands on what they’re learning in the classroom. Other FLC programs, like Adventure Education, use, not only the water, but the outdoors in general to teach leadership, conservation and educational skills. For a larger dose of fun alongside learning, the College’s Outdoor Pursuits program gives students the opportunity to experience the outdoors in many exciting ways, from kayaking to ice climbing.
