Grant awards from July 2015 - February 2016

Over seven months, 23 faculty and staff members received grants for their programs and departments, ranging in size from $250 - $1.4 million.

Liz Ross, Director, The Small Business Development Center, was awarded $25,000 from the First National Bank of Cortez for the Entrepreneurial Expansion Jobs Initiative.

Liz Ross, Director, The Small Business Development Center, was awarded $95,000 for general operating funds, $5,000 for Outreach to Women and Minorities, and $17,000 for the Leading Edge program from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

Susan Decker, Director, STEM³, TRIO Student Support Services, was awarded $1,100,000 for five years of program support from the U.S. Department of Education.

Jenn Wagnon, Director, TRIO Student Success Center, (formerly Program for Academic Advancement), was awarded $1,423,760 for five years of program support from the U.S. Department of Education.

Maureen Brandon, Dean, Arts & Sciences, was awarded $5,055 from the Teagle Foundation for “Infusing Humanities and Social Science Perspectives into STEM.”

Marya Corrigan, Director, TRIO Upward Bound, was awarded $5,287 from the Colorado Department of Education Summer Food Service program.

Ryan Smith, Assistant Professor, Physics & Engineering, was awarded $392,140 from the National Science Foundation for “Major Research Instrumentation: Acquisition of a Heterogeneous Networked Instrument for Aquatic Exploration and Intelligent Sampling.”

Ryan Smith, Assistant Professor, Physics & Engineering, was awarded $35,000 over three years from the City of Durango for “Persistent Robotic Monitoring of Rogers Reservoir.”

Ryan Smith, Assistant Professor, Physics & Engineering, was awarded $10,000 from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society for “Development of an Underwater Robotics Research Training Program.”

Ryan Smith, Assistant Professor, Physics & Engineering, was awarded $20,000 from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society for “Summer School on Marine Robotics.”

Nancy Stoffer, Director, The Office of Diversity Programming, was awarded $20,000 from the John and Sophie Ottens Foundation for Common Ground, an anti-bias and anti-discrimination educational program.

Yvonne Bilinski, Director, The Native American Center, was awarded $118,000 from the John and Sophie Ottens Foundation for “Retention Program Through Support.”

Charles Leslie, Director, The Community Concert Hall, was awarded $8,500 from Colorado Creative Industries for general operating support.

Kim Hannula, Associate Dean, Arts & Sciences and Professor, Geosciences, was awarded $237,230 over three years from the National Science Foundation for “GP-EXTRA: Supporting the Academic and Social Integration of Incoming Transfer Students.”

Pam Smith, Professor, Mathematics, was awarded $5,000 from the American Institute of Mathematics for “The Southwest Colorado Math Teachers Circle.”

Jennifer Gay, Director, The Office of International Programs, was awarded $8,000 from the University Studies Abroad Consortium for “Curriculum Integration.”

Wendy Javier, Director, TRIO Talent Search, was awarded $250 from Trails 2000 for a “Community Service Day Mini Grant.”

Erik Juergensmeyer, Associate Professor, Writing Program, was awarded $2,000 from the Coutts and Clark Western Foundation for “Peace Studies 2015-2016 Projects.”

Kimberlee Bugbee, Public Services Librarian, The FLC Library, was awarded $4,000 from the Colorado State Library Association for “State Grants for Libraries 2015-1026.”

Heidi Steltzer, Associate Professor, Biology, was awarded $73,989 over three years from the National Science Foundation Polar Projects for “APPLES: Arctic Plant Phenology Learning through Engaged Science” a research sub-award through Penn State University.

Charles Hakes, Senior Lecturer, Physics & Engineering, was awarded $100,000 over five years from National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, a subaward through the University of Colorado Boulder.

Shirena Trujillo-Long, Director, El Centro de Muchos Colores, was awarded $1,500 from the Ballantine Family Fund for Latino College Day 2016.

Laurie Williams, Associate Professor, Physics & Engineering, was awarded $1,000 from the La Plata Electric Cooperative Round Up program for the “Environmental Center Sustainable Houses for Engagement and Discovery (SHED) Project.”

Beth LaShell, Coordinator, The Old Fort at Hesperus, was awarded $50,000 over two years from the Colorado Department of Agriculture for “Evaluating high altitude production of hops varieties and creating grower alliances to assist with production and marketing.”

Kendra Reichle, Coordinator, Student Wellness Initiatives, was awarded $2,500 over two years from the Coalition of Colorado Campus Alcohol and Drug Educators for the “CADE Collaborate 2015-2017 Cohort Group.”

William Nollet, Assistant Professor, Physics & Engineering, was awarded $2,000 from Frontier Engineering, for “Frontier Engineering BLC Research 2016.”

Bill Collins, Assistant Professor, Chemistry, was awarded $14,000 from the California Beekeeper’s Association for “Glycosylated Monoterpenoids: A Potentially Novel Miticidal Delivery Method to Combat the Varroa Mite.”
