Hozhoni Days at Fort Lewis College begins March 17

Hozhoni Days, Fort Lewis College’s annual celebration of its unique Native American heritage, will run from March into April 2016. The events begin with a lecture entitled “Minding the Indigenous Mind: Stories of liberation, brain waves, mirror neurons, and healing” by Dr. Michael Yellow Bird. The talk starts at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 in the Center of Southwest Studies, Rm. 120, and is free and open to everyone.

A number of craft workshops will also be a part of the Hozhoni Days schedule, including a Dentalium earrings workshop on March 21, a women’s traditional cloth dress workshop on March 28 and April 4, and a women’s shawl workshop on April 11. Contact Dr. Majel Boxer at 970-247-6102 or Boxer_M@fortlewis.edu to RSVP and for more information.

The traditional heart of Hozhoni Days has always been the Miss Hozhoni Pageant and Powwow. The pageant begins on Wednesday, March 30 and continues on Wednesday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 13. The winner will be crowned on Saturday, April 16 and serve as Fort Lewis College’s official Native American ambassador.

The Powwow kicks off Friday, April 15 and continues through Saturday, April 16. The Hozhoni Days Powwow is one of the largest and longest-running Fort Lewis College traditions.
