Subjects: Petroglyphs--Photographs; Montrose County (Colo.)
Notes: Historic Ute Indian petroglyphs with carvings of four Utes on horseback surrounding a central symbol as the main set of petroglyphs. There is a smaller carving of a Ute on horseback at left side of image. Numerous other shapes have also been carved.The petroglyphs may have been chalked so that they were easier to photograph. This practice is no longer allowed. Shavano Valley Rock Art Site is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. The site contains numerous rock art panels that date from at least 1000 B.C. through approximately 1881. Two numbers written on sleeve 1262 and (more recently) 438. Also typed on sleeve is "Ute Indian cuttings at Robideaux Canon"
