clocktower in summerProfessional Associates (PA) offers a number of programs and activities created to help ensure the FLC student experience is a positive one that encourages scholarship and involvement in college programs and activities. PA initiatives also support recruitment and retention of students.

These activities include:

  • FLC Family Connection recognizes that the first several months in a student's collegiate life are critical to personal success and student retention. The program encourages PA members, local alumni and community members to "adopt" entering first-year, transfer students, and exchange students, to help them successfully adapt to the community and college life. • PA assists the Village Aid Project by helping to organize its annual fundraising event and to broaden its financial support base while publicizing the organization in the community. VAP provides hands-on opportunities for students from all college departments to plan, design, and carry out sustainable water/sanitation projects in remote third world communities. • PA assists FLC Student Affairs in providing a welcoming presence for students and parents during fall orientation and spring recruiting.
  • PA members have provided support for the FLC John F. Reed Honors Program in several ways, including conducting special programs and mentoring projects.
  • PA members provide mentoring services for students. Explore available academic areas.
  • PA members work with college staff to help students develop post-graduation skills to seek jobs or move on to graduate school; such as resume development, interview skills, providing information on how to apply to graduate school, etc.
  • PA helps support departmental student retention by hosting events which bring together freshmen, upper classmen and department staff for conversations about their major fields.
  • PA members serve as readers and scribes at the Testing Center for students qualified for accommodation during exams.
  • PA works with the International Programs Office to facilitate the arrival and transition of international students.  Activities include greeting at and providing transportation from the airport, and assembling and distributing dorm move-in sets for foreign exchange students.
  • PA works with Career Services by offering mock interviews and resume reviews several times during the year, both at campus-wide job fairs and in individual departments.
  • Members act as topic lecturers, student team mentors, and plans reviewers for the annual Hawk Tank Business Plan Competition, which is hosted by the Fort Lewis College School of Business Administration and Office of Alumni Engagement and sponsored by local business organizations and individuals.
  • PA involvement with the Native American Center focuses on understanding native cultures and on creating an encouraging environment to nurture and support all FLC students.
