You have your favorite sports and you love playing them. You find value in teamwork and the opportunity for personal growth in challenging yourself. And you want to share your passion with young people. The benefits of participating in team sports as a young person can have lasting effects in a person’s character development. You can be an instrumental part in establishing that for the next generation.

What can you do with a minor in Coaching?

A coaching minor can be a good complementary minor if you have chosen the K-12 Teaching Option. Being qualified to coach a sport is often the extra résumé ingredient that secures a teaching job over another applicant.

This also applies to students who are pursuing a teaching career in a subject other than Physical Education. The American Sport Education Program (ASEP) certification can be earned in the Introduction to Coaching class (ES 185). Students in any major with an interest in coaching can choose to pursue a coaching minor. Employment of coaches is expected to increase 23% over the next ten years.
