Bruce has worked in the outdoor and adventure education profession for more than 20 years. During this time, he has been an instructor, guide, educator, and administrator in a career spanning the country. Beginning in the Midwest, he started the outdoor program at the University of Wisconsin-Stout managing a climbing center, ropes course, equipment rental, and trip program. It was here he realized his passion for working with students and developing competency-based training for program leaders.
In 2005 he had the opportunity to restart the defunct Green Mountain Adventure Program (GreenMAP) at Green Mountain College. GreenMAP focused on training student leaders and provided weekly student-led trips and a robust Freshmen Wilderness Orientation that served a quarter of incoming student annually. After 12 years running collegiate outdoor programs, he transitioned to faculty. In this role he coordinated the “Fall Block” semester and taught wilderness leadership, paddling, and cycling courses.
After a teaching stint at the University of Idaho coordinating the Outdoor Recreation Leadership Minor, Bruce moved to Durango to teach in the Adventure Education program and coordinate Fort Lewis on the Water (FLOW), an interdisciplinary water-based outdoor education program.
