Dr. O'Neal joined the College in 2015. He previously taught at the University of Texas-Tyler and was a Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas. Additionally, he taught extensively as a percussion specialist in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
O'Neal has performed throughout the United States and Europe and is currently the Principal Timpanist with the San Juan Symphony in Durango, Colorado. Additional professional experience includes performances with the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, Youngstown Symphony, Missouri Symphony, Abilene Philharmonic, Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Allen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. He has performed at the American Bandmasters Association Convention, Texas Music Educators Association Conference, the Kansas Music Educators Conference and the International Percussion Festival in Zagreb, Croatia.
In 2011, O’Neal toured with internationally recognized pianists Gustavo Romero and Eri Nakagawa, presenting a program that included Bela Bartok’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion and Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, arranged for two pianos and percussion. Mr. O’Neal has performed on numerous commercially released recordings for the Klavier, Naxos and GIA labels. He also can be heard with the University of North Texas Wind Symphony on the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series.
O’Neal holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Percussion Performance from the University of North Texas, and additional degrees from Florida State University and the University of Kansas. His teachers include Christopher Deane, Mark Ford, Ed Soph, Paul Rennick, Ed Smith, Dr. John W. Parks, IV and Tom Freer of the Cleveland Orchestra.
