Title: Beyond the Field: Soccer, Identity, and my Journey as a Queer Immigrant Woman
Join us on January 29th at 4:30 p.m. on the Main Stage of the FLC Theatre to hear Dr. Carolina Alonso from the FLC Department of Sociology and Human Services discuss how her academic research and personal journey combined in her first book which examines gender, sexuality, and national identities in Mexican women’s soccer. Dr. Alonso has always been passionate about soccer--or futbol, as she calls it. When the professional women’s league debuted in Mexico, she saw the opportunity to apply her expertise in culture and gender studies to explore feminist and sociopolitical themes in Mexican women's soccer. Through her research, she discovered that many of the most significant themes mirrored her own experiences as an immigrant, queer woman navigating between identities. Get ready to kick off a conversation about the power of sport to shape lives and challenge norms!
The FLC Undergraduate Research Speaker Series allows students at all levels, staff, faculty, and the broader Durango community to hear research-related personal stories. The talks last ~40 minutes, and are followed by Q&A, snacks, and conversation. Watch previous Speaker Series talks on our YouTube channel.
