What to expect when filing a report

Fort Lewis College is committed to addressing concerns of discrimination and harassment in a fair, thorough, and supportive manner. The college follows a formal Grievance Policy designed to ensure impartiality and resolution while protecting the rights of everyone involved.

The grievance process includes the following steps:

  • Thorough and impartial review of all reports.
  • Resolution through one of two paths:
    • Informal mediation, where appropriate, to encourage resolution through mutual agreement.
    • Formal investigation, involving a detailed examination of all evidence.
  • Decisions are made based on the preponderance of evidence standard, meaning it is more likely than not that an incident occurred.
  • Strict protection from retaliation for anyone involved in reporting or participating in the process.
  • Ongoing access to support resources for individuals throughout the process.

This approach reflects Fort Lewis College’s dedication to fostering a safe, inclusive environment where concerns are taken seriously, and all community members feel supported.
