The woman is wearing a dress with vertical stripes and a dog is standing near her. Another woman stands in the background leaning against a post. Household items like a wash basin, a large vase, metal cups, pans, and tables are also pictured under the shelter. Dr. Hetzel described this photo: "Drinking water is rainwater from an open pond, and is stored in old oil drums (far right background), cooled in the porous pottery 'olla' (foreground), and drunk from the common dipper. Consequently dysentery is prevalent and the Papago baby has a life expectancy of 19 years (U.S. average over 60)." | |
