Historical note: Durango became the county seat of La Plata in 1881. An amendment on the ballot in the early 1900s concerned county officers. The earliest record of an election is in 1904. In 1912 the first primary election was held in La Plata County. Effective with the fall of 1954 election, elected county officials were elected for a four-year term.
