DURANGO, Colo. -- The Fort Lewis College Department of Athletics announced on Monday that it has selected Justin Wong as its next volleyball head coach.

"We are thrilled to welcome Justin to Fort Lewis College and Durango," said Director of Athletics Travis Whipple. "He has an outstanding background in volleyball and a proven track record of success that has made every program he has been involved with better. It was evident during our process that he puts the student-athlete experience at the center. He will also continue to place an emphasis on academic success, community involvement, and competitive excellence. We are already looking forward to the fall and the future of Skyhawks volleyball."

Wong joins the Skyhawks after three seasons as an assistant coach at George Washington University, bringing 15 total years of collegiate coaching experience. Before joining GW, he spent four seasons (2018–2022) as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

"I'm incredibly excited to step into this role and become part of such a special community. From the moment I set foot on campus, I was struck by the energy, passion, and vision of the athletics department," said head coach Justin Wong. "The people I've met, the campus, and the town have all made a lasting impression on me. I truly believe in the direction this program is headed, and I'm excited to get to know the team more and start working together."
During his tenure with the Islanders, Wong played a key role in the team's success, helping them secure Southland Championships in both the spring and fall of 2021 and earning back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances—the program's fourth overall. That year, he coached the Southland Player, Setter, and Libero of the Year, with the libero leading the nation in digs per set.

Prior to his time at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Wong was an assistant coach at Georgetown, where he helped develop two Big East All-Conference selections, 27 Big East All-Academic honorees, and an AVCA All-Region selection.
Wong's coaching career also includes a stint at Delaware State, where he was promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach. There, he helped five players earn all-tournament honors while serving as the team's primary video and scouting analyst and recruiting coordinator. Before that, he was a volunteer assistant at Ohio University in 2012, focusing on player development, opponent scouting, and practice planning.

His collegiate coaching career began at Miami University (Ohio), where he served as a volunteer assistant before being promoted to interim assistant coach in 2011.

Beyond the collegiate level, Wong spent 13 years coaching Junior Olympic volleyball. In 2012, he led one of the top-15 club teams at Dallas Skyline Juniors, and at Mintonette Sports in Columbus, Ohio, he guided his team to a runner-up finish at USA Junior Nationals in the 17 National Division, earning a No. 40 national ranking from PrepVolleyball.com. Additionally, he coached at Metro Volleyball Club in D.C., where he assisted the 16 travel team in 2016 and led the 14 travel team to an Open qualification in 2016–17.

As a player, Wong competed as an outside hitter for Ohio State's men's club team. He earned a bachelor's degree in Sport & Leisure Studies with a focus on Coaching & Leisure Management in 2004 and later completed a master's degree in Sport Behavior & Performance at Miami University (Ohio) in 2011.

The Department of Athletics would like to sincerely thank Mammoth Sports Consulting and all of our campus community who were involved in the search process.
