Fort Lewis College Homecoming 2013, which runs from October 16-19, will be a blast this year, literally. A fireworks show is being introduced to go along with the traditional Homecoming events. The fireworks will be shot off from the Rim on campus beginning at 8:30 p.m. as the Homecoming Bonfire, which is lit at 7:30 p.m. after the parade, begins to fade. A special thank you to Durango Fire & Rescue and all the rain over the past few months for making the fireworks show a reality.
Planned and produced by the students of the FLC Homecoming Committee, the celebration gives the community the chance to join in the College’s biggest event of the year. Community members are invited to line Main Avenue to watch the Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 18 at 6 p.m., or even create their own floats and join in. A float sign up form can be found at www.fortlewis.edu/homecoming.
Saturday, October 19 begins with the Mudd Football Tournament behind the Mears Apartments. This flag football tournament has been played at FLC for years, becoming one of Homecoming’s most memorable events. Following Mudd Football, a tailgate party is planned as a lead in to the Homecoming Football Game against Colorado Mesa University. The tailgate begins at 11 a.m. on the southeast side of Dennison Field. The football game kicks off at 1 p.m.
Wrapping up Homecoming 2013 will be a special fundraiser at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in town. The FLC Jazz Band will headline a dance at the VFW where donations will be accepted to help cover the cost of a new wheelchair lift. The dance begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.
There is a lot to see and do for Homecoming 2013. The Homecoming Committee encourages all FLC alumni, as well as friends and supporters of the College, to come home to campus. For more information on Homecoming, visit www.fortlewis.edu/homecoming.
