A hundred and five riders will combine their love of cycling with their love of Fort Lewis College at this year's annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, when the Fort Lewis College Road Scholars Team races the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train from Durango to Silverton in the Citizens Tour on Saturday, May 26, 2012.
The Road Scholars is a spin-off of last year’s Centennial Team, which raised more than $7,000 for the Fort Lewis College Foundation. This year's Team has raised nearly $6,500 -- which will be boosted by a contribution of more than $1,000 from the IHBC -- for the Fort Lewis College Foundation's Iron Horse Bicycle Classic Scholarship Fund.
Sporting specially designed jerseys, the Road Scholars Team will be honored by starting at the front of the pack near the Strater Hotel on Main Avenue. The team is comprised of FLC staff, faculty, alumni, students, and supporters, and a portion of the team members' IHBC registration fees goes to a special scholarship campaign for FLC students. Riders also include a donation to the campaign when they register, and many riders also make an extra contribution.
Representing the team this year will be several prominent cyclists, including Durango Mayor and School of Business Administration chair Doug Lyon and his wife, Chris Lyon, also a SOBA faculty member. Other riders include Carver Brewing Company co-owner Jim Carver, 2011-12 Fort Lewis College Featured Scholar Dr. Gary Gianniny, and well-known local business people and FLC alumni Marchell Fletcher, Jim Morehart, and Jeffrey Speicher.
