10th annual Fiesta on the Mesa held September 15 at Fort Lewis College

The community is invited to join with Fort Lewis College for the 10th annual Fiesta on the Mesa celebration, which will be held Monday, Sept. 15th from 5-8 p.m. at the FLC Amphitheater.

El Centro de Muchos Colores, in collaboration with Club del Cento, Campus Dining and Union Programming, holds this Fiesta to promote pride in language and Hispano culture by sharing our authentic food, colorful dances by Ballet Folklorico de Durango and live Mexican music!

This year’s live music is a special treat with a famously popular Mexican norteño band called Grupo Control, who bill themselves as “Los Reyes de La Cumbia” or kings of the cumbia. Originally from the small town of Control in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, the group released their first album in 2000 and has continually gained fame and fans across the United States and Mexico. Their 90-minute set begins at 5:30 p.m. Just prior, Ballet Folklorico de Durango performs at 5 p.m. followed with a piñata for children, and the annual grito contest to celebrate the loudest and most authentic Mexicano Shout.

Our community partners Compañeros will have an information booth and also sell handcrafted items to benefit their work helping the immigrant community and their loved ones through advocacy, education and integrative programs.

The authentic meal is provided by Sodexo and is free to all FLC students, faculty and staff with ID. For community members and guests, the meal price will be $8 for adults and $4 for children under the age of 10.

The purpose of Fiesta on the Mesa is to kick-off FLC’s month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month which is celebrated nationally from September 15-October 15. The date also commemorates one of Mexico’s most important national holidays known as “El Dia del Grito.”
