FLC campus hosts Squawker Classic cycling races this weekend

Break out those cowbells! It's time to cheer on the FLC Skyhawks Cycling Team as Fort Lewis College hosts the annual Squawker Classic road race, this weekend, March 28 - 29.  Points from this weekend's Squawker go toward qualifying for the USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals in Asheville, North Carolina, May 8 - 10.

Division I collegiate teams from the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference, including arch rivals University of Colorado-Boulder and Colorado State University, as well as Division II powerhouse Colorado Mesa University, descend on Durango for three races in two days.

Saturday morning features the Team Time Trial down La Posta Road, starting at 8 a.m. Four-person collegiate teams and individual racers will start at the intersection of River Road and CR 213 (La Posta Road) at one-minute intervals, finishing 13 miles later in La Posta.

At 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, the FLC campus will be the site of the Criterium Race, a 7/10-mile loop with the start and finish at Pine Hall, on Skyhawk Avenue. Five collegiate and four citizen categories will speed around the course for varying amounts of time based on experience and ability. Racing concludes at 6 p.m.

Sunday brings the Road Race to campus and the surrounding area from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Racing starts on Rim Drive in front of Education & Business Hall, and follows a five-mile circuit around Hillcrest Golf Course, down Goeglein Gulch Road, then back to campus up E. 8th Avenue. The Front Hill will provide great action as racers will climb it as many as nine times.

The Cycling Team is also looking for volunteers to help out at the races. If you're interested, contact FLC Cycling Team Administrator Dave Hagen at hagen_d@fortlewis.edu or 970-247-7460.
