Fort Lewis College signs MOU strengthening its commitment to military service members
On March 1, 2013, Fort Lewis College President Dene Thomas signed the U.S. Department of Defense’s Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU signals Fort Lewis College’s commitment to participate in the Department of Defense’s tuition assistance program for military service members.
Signing the MOU means that service members attending FLC are eligible to have all or a portion of their tuition costs covered by their respective branch of service. If the per credit hour cost per semester is less than $250, then a service member student can have 100 percent of their tuition covered. This would be the case for FLC students paying in-state tuition, which veterans are eligible to do.
“I am committed to helping our military students and their families,” says President Thomas. “DOD’s acceptance of our signed MOU ensures that our military students won’t have any disruption of tuition assistance educational benefits.”
FLC is also a Yellow Ribbon school. The Yellow Ribbon Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and covers the tuition costs for military veterans.
For the fall 2012 semester, the College had 111 students who were receiving some kind of military benefits. These benefits are available to a range of groups, including active duty service members, veterans, or the family of service members.
