Japanese student from FLC wins the Show Your Colors in Colorado photo contest

DURANGO - To celebrate International Education Week, StudyColorado.org created the Show Your Colors in Colorado contest. The contest invited foreign students going to school in Colorado to submit pictures of themselves at their favorite spots in the state.

The winner of the Show Your Colors in Colorado contest was Fort Lewis College student, Hazuki Toyama. Hazuki hails from Okinawa, Japan, and is studying elementary education at FLC.

“I have wanted to come to west side in the states to study abroad because I really like the western atmosphere like cowboy town, huge mountains, and outdoor sports,” Hazuki says of her decision to come to FLC. “At the same time, I thought a small class size was better for me to study my major when I considered which places I wanted to go. In view of my consideration, I found Fort Lewis College was the best school which I can do what all I want to do! After coming here, I found my decision was not wrong for sure.”

Hazuki’s winning picture included two fellow Japanese students, Natsuko Hanatani and Nana Kawata, enjoying ketchup sandwiches shaped like the Japanese flag on campus overlooking Durango. Ketchup sandwiches were an interesting choice, but Hazuki recommends them.

“The ketchup sandwiches were very good!” she says. “It tasted Japan!”

Fort Lewis College has students from 15 foreign countries among its student body this year. Japan has the largest group, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom.
