In honor of her late husband, Paula Lutz is creating two scholarship programs at Fort Lewis College. The first, called the Stan Rabbe Memorial Cycling Scholarship, is an endowed scholarship for deserving students on the Skyhawk Cycling Team.

Many know Stan as a marathoner, having run races on every continent. Cycling was another passion of his, something he picked up after moving to Durango.

“He was a strong, strong cyclist and loved it,” says Paula. “I’m a runner. So when we got together—and I’m a tourist on my bike—he went to running for me, but kept his cycling. When we go cycling he’d cycle with me, that’s the nice guy that he was, but he was a hardcore cyclist.”

Stan was well known and well liked in the community. He taught and coached at Miller Middle School before moving on to Durango High School, where he worked as a counselor. He retired in 2002.

In 2011, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Paula and Stan created the Stan the Marathon Man’s Alzheimer’s 5K to support local Alzheimer’s education and support groups. Unfortunately, Stan passed away earlier this year.

The Stan Rabbe Memorial Cycling Scholarship will support a cycling program that has been ranked #1 in the country. The Skyhawk Cycling Team has won more than 20 national championships and draws cyclists from around the world to live in Durango and study at FLC.

Paula is continuing her work on Alzheimer’s disease by beginning a second scholarship program at Fort Lewis College, this one focused on science. This second program will support FLC biology students who have an interest in Alzheimer’s research. More information on this program will be available in the future.
