Undergraduate Research Symposium is FLC’s biggest day for student research

On Thursday, April 18, 2013, one of the largest scientific research showcases in the Four Corners region will be held at Fort Lewis College. For an eighth year, the FLC School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences’ Undergraduate Research Symposium will display some of the best student research going on at the College. All of the events are free and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Symposium begins at 12:20 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom with a keynote address by FLC Assistant Professor of Biology and 2012-13 FLC Featured Scholar Dr. Erin Lehmer. Following Dr. Lehmer at 1:30 p.m., the students will take center stage with oral presentations of their work, taking place all day in the Student Union Vallecito Room. From 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., back in the Ballroom, the poster presentations will give attendees the opportunity to explore more deeply the students’ work and ask the students questions.

To do graduate and professional level research as an undergraduate with the mentorship of a professor represents an invaluable opportunity for FLC students. The benefits can change lives, as it did with Dr. Gretchen Rothschopf, a 1993 graduate of the FLC Chemistry program. Her own research while at Fort Lewis College gained her international attention.

“[FLC Chemistry Professor] Ron [Estler] and the undergraduate research opportunity opened the world to me. I had lived my whole life on a farm in Colorado. I had not even dreamed of meeting so many people from so many different countries. My experiences with Ron doing research played a large part in my decisions for my future.”
