FLC Policies

Scooters, Bicycles, Skateboards, etc.

Non-motorized:

  • Bicycles, skateboards, in-line skates, scooters and other similar non-motorized, wheeled devices must be operated under control AT ALL TIMES.
  • These devices are NOT allowed to be operated in any building and are NOT allowed on any walls and/or railings.
  • Skateboards and in-line skates are NOT allowed on public roadways. Violation of this policy may result in fines, confiscation of the equipment and disciplinary action.

Motorized:

  • Motorized scooters are allowed on campus. Motorcycle permits will be required for parking, and they must be parked in motorcycle spaces. They are NOT allowed inside buildings.
  • Go-carts cannot be operated legally on roadways or on campus, and so are prohibited.

Construction and Road Closure

The "interior" portion of the campus is for PEDESTRIAN traffic only. Interior portions of the campus are clearly marked by traffic gates with "No Parking" and "Service and Emergency Vehicles Only" signs. Other portions of the interior are accessible only by sidewalks.

YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO DRIVE AND/OR PARK ON THE INTERIOR OF THE FORT LEWIS COLLEGE CAMPUS WHETHER THE TRAFFIC GATES ARE OPEN OR NOT, UNLESS YOU OR YOUR VEHICLE IS SPECIFICALLY EXEMPTED BY THE FORT LEWIS COLLEGE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

Failure to obey this rule may result in charges of Disregarding a Barricade (C.R.S. 42-4-603) or Careless Driving (C.R.S. 42-4-1402).


Damage and Theft

Theft, vandalism or damage to property should be reported immediately to the Durango La Plata Emergency Communications Center, at 385-2900. The Communications Center will dispatch a Fort Lewis College Police Officer to assist you and/or to investigate the accident.

THE COLLEGE DOES NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY LOSS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, INCLUDING THEFT, VANDALISM AND/OR CRIMINAL MISCHIEF/MALICIOUS INJURY TO PROPERTY. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT PARKED CARS REMAIN LOCKED AT ALL TIMES.


Dogs

  • Dogs are permitted on the Fort Lewis College campus, however, may be restricted from entering certain buildings. Restricted buildings will be posted at the entrance.
  • Durango Municipal Code Chapter 4, and La Plata County Code of Ordinances, Chapter 10, apply to the Fort Lewis College campus.
  • Fort Lewis College may issue a summons for violators.

Pedestrians

Fort Lewis College is designated as a pedestrian campus with the safety and welfare of the campus community in mind.  Pedestrians always have the right of way on the Fort Lewis College campus.


Rules of the Road

The responsibility for enforcing traffic and parking regulations rests with the Fort Lewis College Police Department.

  • Fort Lewis College employs State Police Officers.  They are responsible for monitoring traffic on campus, along with their other duties.
  • This department works in cooperation with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office and the Durango Police Department.  Under emergency conditions, the Colorado State Patrol may also be involved in law enforcement on campus.
  • All roadways on campus are public roadways; state, and municipal laws regarding traffic regulations will be enforced.
  • Be advised that Fort Lewis College police officers have the authority to issue tickets for moving violations which will result in a summons to the Durango Municipal city court or La Plata County court.
  • Assessment of a fine and/or loss of parking/driving privileges on campus may result from cases of serious or repeated violations.
  • The speed limit on campus is 25 mph, unless otherwise indicated. 

Snow Warning

During winter months, heavy snow removal equipment will be operating to remove snow from parking lots and campus roads during the day and/or night.

  • When snow levels require thorough snow removal from lots, notices of lot closures will be posted 48 hours in advance.
  • Vehicles that are not moved from these lots will be towed at owner's expense.
  • It is the owner's responsibility to know the weather conditions and to look for notices posted on campus. During periods of heavy snowfall, you may call Fort Lewis College Police/Parking Services (247-7491 or 749-6581) or Physical Plant Services (247-7000) to request snow removal schedule information. 

Towing and Immobilization Policy

The College reserves the right to tow vehicles at the owner's expense by a bonded towing company for the following reasons:

  1. Parking in a handicapped space.
  2. Parking in reserved spaces.
  3. Parking in areas which create a danger to safety and welfare of persons and property (i.e., fire lanes, service areas, traffic lanes, walkways, etc.).
  4. Persistent and flagrant violations of parking rules and regulations.
  5. No Fort Lewis College parking permit.
  6. Abandoned vehicle
  7. Parking in "No Overnight Parking" between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.
  8. During heavy snowfall and, if necessary, for snow removal.
  9. Emergency situations.
  10. Obstruction of maintenance operations
  • It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to recover a towed vehicle from the towing company and to pay towing charges or other associated charges. In the event that the vehicle is booted (immobilized), the driver must contact Fort Lewis College Police by calling 247-7491or 749-6581 so the device can be removed. 
  • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE VEHICLE with the Immobilizer in place. Fort Lewis College accepts no responsibility for damage caused if the vehicle is moved while the Immobilizer is in place. 
  • Tampering with Police property is a punishable offense and may result in a summons to the Durango Municipal Court.

COLLEGE DISCIPLINARY ACTION MAY BE TAKEN IN INSTANCES OF PERSISTENT OR FLAGRANT VIOLATIONS OF FORT LEWIS COLLEGE PARKING/TRAFFIC RULES AND REGULATIONS.
