In 40+ years of operations, OP’s mission of providing FLC students opportunities to get out and experience Mother Nature hasn’t changed. But many of our students are challenged financially to take advantage of the Southwest’s myriad outdoor recreational adventures.
Therefore, student fees fund our budget and are limited to supporting program operating costs, such as rental equipment purchases and maintenance, student employment, activity creation, and administrative costs. Though the student fee helps to offset activity costs, more is needed for some of our students to participate.
The Give an Adventure Fund allows these under-resourced students to experience and learn from our planet’s amazing deserts, mountains, rivers, and oceans. This inclusive fund creates opportunities for all Fort Lewis College students to participate in OP programs and trips, from single-day trips across the region to multi-day global adventures.
Each semester, students can apply for grants generated by the Give an Adventure Fund, which will, in turn, help them pay for trips listed on OP’s semester programming calendar. As part of OP’s Celebration of Adventure, students can apply for funding through the Give an Adventure Fund to support their dream adventure through a $500 Seek Your Adventure Award.
“The Seek Your Adventure Award created the opportunity for a couple of friends and me to finally pull off a trip that we had been talking about for years–and to do it right, truly immerse ourselves in the landscape. It strengthened my sense of place here in the San Juan Mountains and filled me with the connection, reflection, and unfiltered joy that can only come from a longer trip with excellent partners. This would not have been possible without the mentorship we received through Outdoor Pursuits and the financial support provided by the Seek Your Adventure Award.” —Carl Schnitker (Adventure Education, ‘19)
