Environmental & Sustainability Student Groups

The Environmental Center is a great place to get involved and get some hands-on experience - but we can't do it all ourselves! There are a number of Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) that are focused on environmental and social responsibility topics.

Check out the featured organizations below or find them on SkyHub.

  • Bee Club
  • Grub Hub
  • One for the World

Bee Club

The main goal of the Bee Club is to give students the opportunity to engage in bee-centric activities and discussions, as well as inspire students to become bee activists and beekeepers.  The Bee Club is designed to give students the opportunity to learn and practice beekeeping and to discuss and promote the unique importance of native bee pollinators. We have a honey bee apiary on campus, and club members have ample opportunity to work hands on with the bees. Beekeeping is an important and quickly growing form of urban agriculture that promotes healthy hives, healthy gardens, and healthy lives. We also have a pollinator garden on campus that serves to highlight the importance of all pollinators to ecosystem health and stability.

Grub Hub

The Grub Hub is a student-led food pantry operating on the Fort Lewis College campus. It is dedicated to social justice and de-stigmatizing food insecurity. The Grub Hub distributes recovered and donated food items to students, and relies on the work of passionate students and the generosity of our campus community. For more information on the location and operating hours of the Grub Hub, contact the Sociology & Human Services Department.

One for the World

One for the World Fort Lewis educates students about extreme poverty and encourages a 1% giving pledge to effective charities working in global health and development. We are looking for students interested in making the world better and are willing to take action towards that goal.

H2Org – Water Club

H2Org is FLC’s student-led organization focused on water. The mission of H2Org is to equip a new generation of water leaders with information and skills to gain a career in a water profession and the share through service and education. As a member of H2Org, you’ll arrange guest speaker events, take field trips to water sites such as Durango’s fish hatchery and the municipal drinking water plant, and gain hands-on experience using professional tools such as USGS stream gauge data, SNOTEL data, and identifying benthic macroinvertebrates. To further prepare you for a career in water, you’ll have service and volunteer, as well as internship opportunities that open your door to the regional community of water professionals.

Village Aid Project

The Village Aid Project (VAP) is a student focused, humanitarian organization that helps poor communities in the developing world construct improved water and sanitation systems as well as other projects that address critical community needs. VAP gives students and opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to solving “real” problems in engineering, education, health, economics, and more. Through these volunteer efforts students gain an understanding of different cultures and what it means to be a global citizen.

SEEDS

The Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability program (SEEDS) is the flagship award-winning education program of the Ecological Society of America. Its mission is to diversify and advance the ecology profession through opportunities that stimulate and nurture the interest of underrepresented students to participate, and to lead in ecology. The core SEEDS program components offer hands-on, engaging experiences with ecology that exhibit the relevance and applications of the science. Each experience also provides opportunities to interact with a diverse group of ecologists and other motivated students to both broaden and deepen students’ understanding of ecology and potential careers. Focused mainly at the undergraduate level, with extension services for communities, high schools, graduate students, and international collaborations, the SEEDS program promotes an ecology profession with wide representation to ensure environmental understanding and a sustainable future for all.
