Zoom is video conferencing software that allows you to host or participate in meetings virtually with video, audio or phone. You can share your screen with meeting participants, collaborate on a digital whiteboard, and use breakout rooms to chat in small groups. Your instructors may use Zoom for virtual class meetings throughout the term, so it is important to be able to do the following:
Each student has a Zoom account through FLC's institutional Zoom account. To activate your Zoom account, follow these steps:
NOTE: If you have created a Zoom account using their FLC email (at zoom.us), we recommend that you delete that one and create a new one through the steps above.
If your course instructor schedules Zoom meetings through the Canvas-Zoom integration, you will see "Zoom LTI Pro" as a link in the Canvas course menu. Any meeting scheduled through the Zoom LTI Pro tool will automatically show up on your Canvas calendar so that you never miss a beat!
You can also find all upcoming meetings and past recordings by clicking on the Zoom LTI Pro link in the Canvas course menu. When you click on a Zoom meeting recording, you will be directed to the original recording file at fortlewis.zoom.us and can access the video transcriptions along with the chat files. NOTE: If you are redirected to log in again, make sure that you are always in the Fort Lewis instance of Zoom (you should see fortlewis.zoom.us at the beginning of the URL).
There may be times that you want to use Zoom to schedule a Zoom meeting between yourself and your peers. To schedule a meeting, you'll need to log into your Zoom account and schedule your meeting following Zoom's instructions for scheduling meetings. All students have basic Zoom accounts which allow for 40-minute meetings and up to 100 participants.
Zoom offers many accessibility features, such as 3rd party closed captioning integration, automatic transcripts for meeting recordings, screen readers support, and keyboard accessibility. You can find documentation for keyboard shortcuts, VPATs and accessibility FAQs on Zoom’s accessibility page (Links to an external site.).
When you receive the link to a recording, it is important to know that the recordings are accompanied by Zoom’s audio transcripts (Links to an external site.). You will need to ensure that your professor records the meeting to the cloud rather than to the local computer. When you view a Zoom cloud recording, click on the CC bottom at the bottom of the video to view the transcripts in a right-hand panel as the video recording plays.
If you need any assistance, please visit Zoom Technical Support in Zoom's Help Center. You'll find online resources and chatbot support. Your Student Tech Team and FLC's Information Technology office are here to help, too.
