Former FLC professor Leonard “Red” Bird authored Folding Paper Cranes: An Atomic Memoir before he died in 2010. The book recounts Bird’s experience as a young U.S. Marine who participated in nuclear tests conducted at the Nevada Test Site in 1957. The Durango Herald explored how Oppenheimer, a film about the atomic bomb and its creator, breathes new life into Bird’s work.
Fort Lewis College Alumni Reed Clément (English Communications ’05) created his own degree emphasis in videography while at FLC. After graduating, Reed headed for the locus of all things cinematic, Los Angeles, California. He now heads up Netflix’s CREATIVE LABS division at their Hollywood branch headquarters. Reed discusses his time at FLC, how it changed him, and how what he learned at the school informs his work today.

Fort Lewis College’s overall enrollment grew by 1.9 percent compared to last year, with dual enrollment, graduate, and transfer students driving the growth. This year, the College also reached a significant milestone: For the first time, its Hispanic/Latinx population reached 15 percent of the student body, paving the way for the College to become an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution.
FLC is increasing its on-campus housing options for students. Dean of Student Engagement Jeff Dupont told The Durango Herald that FLC aims to offer safe housing options at or below market rates so students have different price points. Three-person dorms are the least expensive option, and single-room apartments are near market rate. The College has experienced a 25% increase in on-campus housing for continuing students, the Herald reported.
